I thought this was interesting

Long-term treatment with finasteride 1 mg decreases the likelihood of developing further visible hair loss in men with androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss).

Eur J Dermatol. 2008 Jul-Aug;18(4):400-6

There are no reports on the effects of pharmacologic treatment on the likelihood of developing further visible hair loss in men with androgenetic alopecia (AGA). Our objectives were to examine whether finasteride 1 mg treatment decreases the likelihood of developing further visible hair loss in men with AGA.

We conducted an analysis of global photographic assessment data from two Phase III trials in which 1553 men with AGA received finasteride 1 mg/day or placebo for up to 5 years. Finasteride 1 mg treatment led to a 93% decrease relative to placebo in the 5-year likelihood of developing further visible hair loss (95% CI: 89-97%; p < 0.001).

We conclude that, in men with AGA, treatment with finasteride 1 mg/day over 5 years led to a marked and sustained decrease in the likelihood of developing further visible hair loss.

Hi Wally,

I was on propecia for a while. I didn't really have that good of an experience with propecia. The side effects outweigh the positives. More notably, I experienced a definitive decrease in my libido.  The only permanent solution to hair loss are hair transplants. My experience with Dr. Armani was fantastic. If I need more work in the future, I found the right doctor to do so.

The issue is with propecia is how long before it becomes ineffective after your body gets used to it.

After 5 years on propecia, ive kept my hair fairly well..but forget the front section - propecia cant help for that.

I tried propecia for two miserable weeks and had no choice but to discontinue the use of it. I felt and, according to my wife, i looked like i was on heroine. Apparently the vast majority of men who have tried this drug have had the same or similar side effects. I also tried an equivalent dosing of saw palmetto and experienced the same side effects.

It's great that you shared your experience on Propecia but I am not sure how you can speak for the vast majority of men. I have been on propecia for 3 years and never suffered any sides.

I have been on propecia for roughly 18 months and never experienced any adverse side effects. Everyone is different though.

The only side effect I found with it was that when getting an erection it was at like 90%, still perfectly usable & never had any complaints but there was a slight difference to when I was not taking proscar.

Thanks for sharing this article.  Im glad I took the plunge and started using it along time ago, as I think I would have alot less hair now if I hadnt started on it.

Well, yes and no, I use propecia foam and liquid, and it's definitely slowed down the process but I'm still losing hair in the prone areas of my head, especially the crown. I'll probably need to do that soon.

Wait a minute sorry about that above, that comment was for rogaine. I got it mixed up. But for real, I haven't had much success with the propecia medication really it didn't work for me. All I would get is the side affects. I stopped it once then tried it again and then went back. Luckily the side affects went away after a few weeks/month.

I took propecia for a couple of years, and thought I wasn't seeing any results because my hair never got thicker... So I stopped taking it... HUGE MISTAKE!! Over a 6 month period I lost a ton of hair. I realized that the propecia, while not growing additional hair, was preventing me from losing any more hair during that period. So when I stopped taking it, I lost everything that I had saved.... Dumb mistake, and I am now on it for good.

Recommendations to those with side effects.. Cut your dosage in half or start taking it every other day instead of daily. Try to find a balance where you don't have any side effects, but you are still getting the benefits of taking the medication. The only side effect I have noticed is a slight decrease in libido.. Good Luck!!!

Well depending upon the feed back provided by people it has been found the Propecia really works not only to go for in stopping hair loss, but also resulting in regrowth of hair as well. Some people complain about side effects while using Propecia.

If used correctly, propecia is sure to produce the desired results. I have never experienced any side-effects. Depends on your hair type.
